The Breeders es una banda de rock liderada por las hermanas gemelas Kim y Kelley Deal.

Activa desde 1988, su segundo álbum, Last Splash, alcanzó el puesto #33 en la cartelera Billboard de 1993. Entre 1994 hasta 1999, The Breeders estuvo inactivo.

Originalmente, The Breeders era el nombre con el que Kim y Kelley Deal tocaban ocasionalmente en Dayton, Ohio a principios de los ochenta. En 1989, aún siendo miembro de los Pixies, Kim rescató el nombre para un proyecto paralelo planeado junto a Tanya Donnelly (entonces de las Throwing Muses, y más tarde con Belly), Josephine Wiggs y la violinista Carrie Bradley. Mientras grababa una canción con los Pixies en Chicago, Kim conoció al baterista Britt Walford, que después formaría parte de los legendarios Slint, y accedió a tocar en el proyecto.

La banda se reunió en Edimburgo y grabó el álbum "Pod" con Steve Albini de productor, con quien Kim ya había trabajado en el mítico álbum de los Pixies "Surfer Rosa". "Pod" se grabó tan rápidamente que al grupo le sobró tiempo en el estudio para grabar unas peel sessions.

Al cabo de un tiempo, después de la edición de "Pod", los Pixies se separaron temporalmente. Kelly Deal se unió al grupo para la grabación del EP "Safari" (editado en abril de 1992), que también significó la última colaboración en el grupo de Tanya Donnelly y Brit Walford. Britt fue reemplazado por Jim MacPherson, a quien Kim conocía del grupo de Dayton Raging Mantras. The Breeders grabaron "Last Splash" en San Francisco mientras vivían en casas flotantes. Después de su edición en agosto de 1993, la banda giró con Nirvana, vendió dos millones de discos y tuvo un éxito masivo con el single "Cannonball". El vídeo de dicha canción lo dirigió Kim Gordon (de Sonic Youth) junto a Spike Jonze. The Prodigy sampleó un fragmento de "S.O.S." para su super-éxito "Firestarter".

El estrés y la dureza de la vida en la carretera tuvo sin embargo, nefastas consecuencias. Kelley se hizo adicta a las drogas y tuvo muchos problemas con la justícia norteamericana. Además, Josephine decidió empezar una vida sedentaria en Nueva York. Kim aún quería seguir grabando discos así que formó una nueva bnada temporalmente junto a Jim MacPherson llamada The Amps, que editó el álbum "Pacer" en 1995 y posteriormente hizo una gira mundial.

En verano de 1999, Kim y Kelly se volvieron a reunir para en Austin para componer algunos de los temas que formarán parte de "Title TK", el nuevo disco que The Breeders editarán está primavera. Para la grabación Kim decidió no utilizar ordenadores ni nuevas tecnologías digitales, con la idea de conseguir un disco de sonoridad clásica. Ese mismo invierno Kim conoció en East Los Angeles a los miembros del grupo punk Fear, a los que invitó a tocar con ella en una formación de The Breeders. Así pues, al grupo se le han unido el guitarrista Richard Presley, el bajista Mando López y Jose Medeles.

canciones frescas para este año 2008. Este es un grupo de nombre curioso (SSLYBY) que hace referencia al primer presidente de Rusia - Boris Yeltsin, con una carrera muy cortita.... este es su segundo disco y por ahí además tienen un 7" con un par de canciones adicionales.

"Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, a band, couldn’t list a single music blog until their lo-fi MP3s and low-res JPEGs made them worldwide icons of Blogdom in 2005. Their debut record, Broom is an expertly crafted indie pop gem. Spin magazine read an SSLYBY blog, downloaded their music and declared the Missouri band “could succeed The Shins.” Then a slew of bloggers ranked them ahead of Wilco and Iron & Wine in Leafblower’s annual “Top Bands of America Today”.
“Internet fame doesn’t make sense to us,” says drummer and main songwriter Philip Dickey. “I don’t think our lead singer has an e-mail address.”

All members were babies in the early 80s. A mutual ex-girlfriend from high school introduced the original members of the band. And that’s also where the name comes from—high school. “I thought of it when I was at the mall with my mom,” Dickey says. “We’re not good at naming things or planning ahead. We only tried to make people like us a couple years ago.”

SSLYBY’s hometown used to be a beacon of pop music in the 50’s. That’s when The Ozark Jubilee was broadcasting live country music from the downtown Springfield, entertaining millions of viewers every Saturday night on primetime NBC. “We think about that show a lot,” Dickey says. “Our little town was the third highest origination point for national television…third only to New York and Hollywood. We want to bring the spotlight back here. Moving to Brooklyn or LA would be copping out. We’re not that sad about living in Missouri.”

The band released their debut album, Broom, originally in March 2005. Broom was recorded in an attic and a living room on Weller Street, Knauer’s home. The band’s ambition was simple- to make the “Local Releases” bin at CD Warehouse. However, it turned into a classic rock ‘n’ roll record: the kind where pop perfectionism meets studio experimentations and each track flows effortlessly. Relatively tame pop songs are molded by happy accidents of fate, sometimes involving unexplained swarming sounds and doubled drums tracks.

The band posted Broom MP3s on their website, and that’s how the blogging boom began. Then the San Francisco Weekly wrote a love letter to the band—literally.

“Dear Unknown Band from Middle of Nowhere Missouri, How do I love thee? …your debut is one of those rare albums where every song is crafted, delicious, and essential. This is disgusting, really, given the fact that the oldest member of your band is only 22. Yours truly, Chris Baty”

And the infatuation hasn’t ended. It’s impossible to find a reviewer or blogger that isn’t lovesick over Broom, even with omniscient help of Google.

The band is in the process of following up Broom at incessant pace. Each month SSLYBY releases 30 minutes of analog recordings to subscribers of their prolific “Tape Club”. And they proved they were a real band when they toured with Secretly Canadian’s Catfish Haven in February. The Columbia Tribune called it one of the best shows of the year….“Springfield up-and-comer doesn’t yet realize the gifts it possesses - a scary thought.”

Also scary: the reviews barely scratch the surface of SSLYBY’s virtues. Listen to what Pitchfork labeled the “Basement MP3’s”. Scour the internet. Feel the love poured into each song. And watch Google completely debase the way we discover our new favorite bands."

si veis las referencias musicales de este grupo os podréis hacer una idea aproximada de cómo suena el album debut de Chris Walla: Tegan And Sara, Mates Of State, Death Cab for Cutie, The Decemberist....

Y estas referencias se deben a que Christopher es el guitarrista y productor de Death Cab for Cutie además de otros grupos. Actualmente reside en Portland, Oregon y el disco que hoy os presento es el projecto en solitario de Chris y que por diversos motivos nunca ha salido a la luz. De hecho 1999 se publicó un cassette con algunas de sus canciones (por aquel entonces se llamaba Martin Youth Auxiliary) y apenas se hicieron unas docenas de copias. Sin embargo después de unos cuantos años por fin este trabajo ha salido a la luz para ofrecernos unos temas delicados, tranquilos y que perpetuan la estética de toda su carrera.

"Chris Walla will release his debut solo full-length field manual on January 29, 2008, on Barsuk Records.

Known both as the guitarist / producer in Death Cab for Cutie and as an in-demand producer of other independent-minded artists (Tegan & Sara, The Decemberists), Walla brings a refined aesthetic and melodic ear to everything he involves himself in. Walla's past recordings of his own songs (occasionally made available online under the name "Martin Youth Auxiliary") have mostly been quickly-recorded lo-fi sketches unintended for widespread release. field manual represents the first time his own songs have been given the studio attention and thought-out approach to recording for which he is in such demand by others.

In addition to the expected difficulties he encountered attempting to approach his own work with the necessary detachment of a producer [difficulties which led Walla to enlist the help of Canada-based British ex-pat (and Midnight Oil / The The producer) Warne Livesey], the project hit an unexpected snag when a data hard drive containing critical album files was confiscated by U.S.Customs. The drive was held "to be analyzed" for several weeks on its way back into the U.S. prior to final mixing of the album. (Apparently the U.S. government is unfamiliar with FTP sites, and believes that physically transporting hard drives across the border is the technique of choice for foreign individuals trying to move sensitive information into our country. Brilliant.)

Interestingly, a strong political thread runs through the record's lyrics; Walla takes more than a few shots at U.S. policy, both at home and abroad, and challenges at least one senator to find the exit door... For whatever reason, the drive has still not been returned, and so Walla is working with his original tapes and a back-up drive (during his breaks from the studio where he's currently producing a new Death Cab record tentatively slated for release in late spring or early summer of 2008) to re-apply the finishing touches on the album.
Walla played all the instruments on this record, except for drums. Drum duty was shared by Jason McGerr (of DCfC) and Kurt Dahle (of New Pornographers)."

ya tenemos aquí la recopilación del 2007 con los 42 mejores temas / grupos del año.

Se que ha costado un tiempo sacarla adelante (ya estamos a mediados de febrero) pero la espera seguro que merece la pena.

Casi 2 horas y media de música fresquita y sumamente 'bailable'. Entre los temas destacables encontramos:

• Existe una escena sueca de grupos de calidad que en los últimos tiempos acapara portadas, conciertos y reseñas de sus discos... y por tanto tenían que tener su presencia (una presencia realmente grande) en estos discos. Destacar adicionalmente la frescura de las composiciones, que irremediablemente hacen que te muevas al son de la música. Los grupos destacables son Loney, Dear, Pelle Carlberg, Jens Lekman, Irene, Club 8....
  
  
• Algunos grupos han destacado también en el 2007 por ofrecer un directo emocionante, apasionado y por sabernos impresionar cuando se supone que ya está todo invientado. Entre ellos tenemos a LCD Soundsystem (sin lugar a dudas el mejor concierto del 2008 el que dieron en el Summercase), Modest Mouse (Primavera Sound), PJ Harvey (Summercase), Arcade Fire (Summercase), Bruce Springsteen ...
  
  
• También la calidad en los discos del 2007 se ha visto premiada. Es necesario homenajear a esos grupos que han ofrecido al oyente una sucesión continua de buenas canciones, de un exceso de calidad musical que rebosa en cada composición. Entre estos grupos destacamos Cats On Fire, Stars, Saturday Looks Good To Me o Richard Hawley.
  
  
• Destacamos adicionalmente alguna rareza venida incluso de finales del 2006. Entre las mismas podemos encontrar el tema 'Worry A Lot' del grupo The Zebras. Según mi opinión era necesario incluir a este grupo en esta recopilación porque realmente vale su peso en oro, tanto el disco como su directo; y esto es lo que justamente se premia con esta lista. También vemos el tema 'Falling Slowly' de la banda sonora de ONCE interpretado por Glen Hansard y Marketa Irglova que vió la luz en 2006 pero que hasta 2007 no se estrenó aquí en España.
  
  
• Como novedad hemos incluido un tema español de un grupo (de 1 persona sin ir más lejos) que bien merece entrar en esta recopilación. La Casa Azul se ha ganado dicha medalla y no con el tema que todo el mundo ahora escucha gracias a Eurovisión. En este caso me he decantado por el tema 'Esta Noche sólo cantan para mí'.
  
  
• Evidentemente Amy Winehouse también se ha colado en esta lista, porque indudablemente es una artista como la copa de un pino, independientemente de la vida privada que tenga.
  
  
• Y no quería finalizar estos comentarios sin nombrar esos grupos y canciones esenciales, que han conseguido que mis pies se movieran, que disfrutara escuchando tema tras tema en el coche, que han logrado que ame más la música cada día, que mi sensibilidad se ponga de puntillas y que poco a poco hacen que la iniciativa 'Minutos Musicales' tenga cada día más sentido para mí y espero que para vosotros: Voxtrot, Los Campesinos!, Nurse & Soldier, The Icicles, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Strange Idols o Maria Taylor.

Evidentemente debo dar las gracias a varias personas:

A todos aquellos que voluntariamente o involuntariamente me ofrecieron un riconcito de sus gustos para que yo pudiera catarlos... sois varios, que lo sepáis.

hoy nos vamos cerquita para daros los minutos musicales.

Os presento a Aaron Thomas, cantante y compositor Australiano que empezo a escribir y tocar musica hace unos nueve años. Ha realizado giras por Australia, España y Los Angeles. Residente en la actualidad en Madrid, acaba de completar la grabación de su primer album titulado "Follow the Elephants" que esta listo para publicarse en todo el mundo en febrero. Algunas de sus influencias son Jeff Buckley, Bob Dylan, Radiohead, The Beatles o Camille. Con batería, contrabajo, guitarra, piano y coros, su musica es cruda y orgánica, con una voz y letras potentes. Las comparaciones salen de forma innata.

Minutos Musicales: Cat Power

aquí tenemos un par de temas de una artista de nombre ya consolidado: Cat Power.

Cat Power es el nombre artístico de la cantante estadounidense Chan Marshal (nacida Charlyn Marie Marshall, el 21 de enero de 1972). Su música reciente puede ser adscrita al country alternativo, aunque ésta es especialmente minimalista y se ha caracterizado por explorar muchos géneros y estilos a través de su ya larga carrera. En sus grabaciones toca normalmente la guitarra y el piano. A menudo es acompañada por un grupo tanto en el estudio como en concierto.

En su haber ya tiene 8 discos y en el escenario muestra un carácter propio y juguetón. Como muestra un ejemplo:

Hija de padres divorciados, vino al mundo en el estado sureño de Georgia. Tras dejar el instituto empezó a actuar con el nombre de Cat Power en Atlanta. Se trasladaría rápidamente a Nueva York donde actuando como telonera para Liz Phair conoció a Steve Shelley, batería de Sonic Youth, y a Tim Foljahn de Two Dollar Guitar, los cuales le animaron a grabar los que serían sus dos primeros discos: Dear Sir de 1995 y Myra Lee de 1996. En ellos, Chan se muestra como una cantautora personal y enigmática, a pesar de la rudeza y oscuridad de las grabaciones.

El gran impulso a su carrera llegaría en 1996 al firmar por el sello Matador Records, uno de las discográficas indies más reconocidas e influentes de Estados Unidos. En ese mismo sello aparecería su tercer álbum What Would the Community Think, del que se extraería el single Nude as the News, acompañado de un videoclip dirigido por Brett Vapnek.

En 1998 llegaría Moon Pix. Grabado íntegramente en Australia con la ayuda de Jim White y Mick Turner, componentes de la banda Dirty Three se convirtió en un éxito de crítica y le catapultó al estrellato en el mundo indie. La sutileza y oscura simplicidad de los temas son de una belleza sorprendente.

En 2000 se publica The Covers Record, una colección de versiones de artistas como Bob Dylan, The Velvet Underground, los Rolling Stones o Moby Grape que había grabado en los años previos. Sin embargo, el disco no incluía otras versiones de, por ejemplo, Dylan que había grabado en una Peel Session del programa de la BBC de John Peel.

Tras un parón de cinco años sin disco "propio", en 2003 aparece You Are Free. En el LP aparecen nombres conocidos como Eddie Vedder de Pearl Jam y Dave Grohl de Nirvana y Foo Fighters, además del también miembro de Dirty Three y de los Bad Seeds Warren Ellis. El disco, mucho más instrumental y luminoso que los anteriores, le ayudaría a cimentar su estatus de celebridad alternativa además de volver a centrar los focos de la crítica internacional.

Su siguiente lanzamiento no sería un disco tradicional y al uso, sino un DVD llamado Speaking for Trees que contiene un vídeo de más de cien minutos de duración donde Chan aparece cantando en medio de un claro de un bosque canciones nuevas y otras ya conocidas acompañada sólo de una guitarra. El vídeo esta dirigido por el realizador Mark Borthwick. El DVD estaba acompañado también por un Cd de audio compuesto por una canción de 18 minutos "Willie Deadwilder" en la que es acompañada a la guitarra por el músico M. Ward.

The Greatest llega en enero de 2006. El disco (no confundir con un "grandes éxitos") está grabado en Memphis acompañada de músicos que hicieron carrera junto a grandes de la música soul y sureña como Mabon Teenie, guitarrista de Al Green o Steve Potts, baterista de Booker T & The MG´s. El disco fue precedido por el single "The Greatest / Hate" y de la canción "Living Proof" se lanzó un videoclip realizado por el polémico director Harmony Korine. Ha sido un gran éxito comercial en comparación a sus trabajos anteriores, pero es importante remarcar que poco tiene que ver con los mismos en términos musicales.

Minutos Musicales: Times New Viking

Matador nos ofrece como sello otro de esos discos que no hay que dejar pasar en el 2008. Se trata del último album de 'Times New Viking', el tercero en su carrera discográfica (Dig yourself - 2005 y Present the Paisley Reich - 2007).

Canciones reposadas de poca tranquilidad y con mucho mucho ruido. El adjetivo reposadas está puesto expresamente y se refiere a que las canciones a pesar de ser cortas saber ir contagiando poco a poco a lo largo del album. Especial mención a un tema llamado 'Times New Viking Vs. Yo La Tengo'. Su propio nombre delata a la canción.

"Times New Viking is a lo-fi indie rock band based out of Columbus, Ohio. The line up consists of guitarist Jared Phillips, drummer Adam Elliott, and Beth Murphy on keyboards. Murphy and Elliott share vocal duties. They are currently signed to Matador Records and were formerly signed to Siltbreeze Records. They have released three records: 2005's Dig Yourself, 2007's Present the Paisley Reich, and 2008's Rip It Off."

Minutos Musicales: Blood On The Wall

aquí os dejo un par de temas que se pueden extraer de un grupo con claras referencias heavys pero que ha sabido perpetuar un sonido parecido a Dinosaur Jr. y que tildaría como 'sonidos de potencia contenida y sutil puesta a disposición'.

Según se definen en la web de su discográfica son un grupo revival de rock and roll liderados por 2 hermanos cantautores (Brad & Courtney).

"Blood on the Wall is a lo-fi, Brooklyn-based indie rock band, influenced by bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain, Pavement, Pixies, and Sonic Youth. Band members include siblings Courtney (bassist/vocalist) and Brad Shanks (guitarist/vocalist) and drummer Miggy Littleton. They have released two full-length albums, Blood on the Wall (2003) and Awesomer (2005). Blood on the Wall are signed to the Brooklyn based label The Social Registry.

The band toured with Yeah Yeah Yeahs in 2006.

Minutos Musicales: Strange Idols

Estimados,
aunque la cita sea casi de un día para otro, os anuncio el primer evento Minutos Musicales del año 2008 y que consistirá en el concierto del grupo inglés Strange Idols en la sala Nasti mañana a partir de la 1 de la mañana.

Y para que veáis que el evento merece la pena pues en este correo os presento al grupo y el trabajo que han realizado hasta el momento y que bien se puede resumir en el disco que hoy os presento y que consiste en un mini-album que recopila los EP publicados por este grupo (que fueron ediciones limitadas y una de ellas sólo en vinilo) más alguna que otra canción adicional.

Uno de estos temas formará parte de la recopilación Minutos Musicales 2007.... que en la semana que viene seguramente salga a la luz para goze y disfrute de todos vosotros. El sorteo del DVD lo realizaremos la semana siguiente y os puedo asegurar que realmente merece mucho la pena.... si todo sigue así en dicho DVD habrá muchas muchas sorpresas. ;-DDD

Minutos Musicales: Novedades 2007 y 2008 !!!

Estimados amig@s de Minutos Musicales,
no quería dejar pasar la oportunidad de saludaros a todos antes de que las navidades nos atraigan inexorablemente. Aquí os comento diversas noticias relacionadas con el mundo Minutos Musicales tanto desde el punto de vista de su situación actual como de su evolución futura. Recordaros que existe una lista de distribución de correo en paralelo a este blog en el que se envian temas de todos los grupos que aquí aparecen y que al final representan un fantástico panorama de lo que se mueve cada año en el panorama indie pop (Si quieres entrar en la lista enviame un comentario a cualquier post de este blog y te doy de alta).

• Esta semana será la última del 2007 en la que se envie esta lista de distribución con música de calidad. El año que viene (2008) continuaremos mostrando lo que a mí entender es buena música y que normalmente suele salirse del circuito comercial.
  
• Por ello y en los días hasta que retomemos la actividad musical normal, iré desgranando y seleccionando lo que será el doble album con lo mejor del 2007, un clásico ya entre todos vosotros. También iré formando lo que será un DVD con todos los Minutos Musicales del 2007 y algunas sorpresas aunque tal y como estoy viendo el tema seguramente se necesite un poquito más que un DVD para acaparar todo lo que ha dado de sí este año. A ver si me dá tiempo y en esta semana tenéis más noticias al respecto. ;-DDD
  
• Este año ha sido un año con muchas iniciativas y cambios.
  

'Eventos Minutos Musicales' - Durante este año ha habido un pool de conciertos clave y que por méritos propios se convirtieron en los Eventos Minutos Musicales del año. Aquí los tenéis:

En el próximo año destacaremos otro pool de conciertos que seguro que se convertirán en una referencia para muchos de vosotros. Hay que ir tomando nota por ejemplo de un concierto en Madrid de Cola Jet Set junto con School el 16 de febrero en la sala El Sol.

• El blog de Minutos Musicales ( http://minutos-musicales.blogspot.com/ ) ha tenido diversas modificaciones y actualmente está adaptado fielmente a lo que esta lista de distribución ofrece. Si os dáis cuenta, el blog se ha convertido en un transmisor fiel de esos grupos que escuchais y en una agenda que para mí es más que completa si tienes tu ubicación en Madrid (aunque la parte de festivales no se ha despreciado en absoluto).
  

Para el próximo año al blog me gustaría pedirle muchos deseos porque hay projectos en mi mente que serían bien chulos tenerlos plasmados ahí pero la verdad es que necesito tiempo y el año que viene me dá a mí que voy a estar pelín ocupado con otros menesteres.

• Así mismo hay otra iniciativa a la que le estoy dedicando algo de tiempo porque creo que merece la pena y no sólo por el hecho de que mi abuela la lea de vez en cuando: El Fotolog ( http://www.fotolog.com/eolrin ). En el próximo año seguiremos ofreciendo píldoras diarias de la vida del que suscribe, y algunas de ellas se relacionarán directamente con la música.
  
• Y con respecto al resto de iniciativas pues les seguiremos dando continuidad. Os dejo nada más un par de informaciones al respecto:

Myspace Minutos Musicales ( http://www.myspace.com/eolrin ): Más de 450 amigos en esta red social aunque habrá que darle un apaño para que quede mucho más molona y operativa.

• Tengo previsto enviaros bastante información de lo que ha sido este año (además del doble disco que estará disponible a mediados de enero y del DVD pertinente que seguramente sortearé al igual que el año pasado) entre la que se incluye una lista esencial de discos del 2007, un compendio vía documentación de todo lo que ha sido esta lista de distribución en el 2007 y otro documento en donde se destacará todo lo que se ha recomendado desde aquí (disco, album, canción, etc....).
  
• Por último, quería agradeceros a todos vuestra fidelidad, comentarios y apoyo. Sois muchos y la verdad es que esta lista ha crecido exponencialmente desde sus inicios (ya tiene más de 2 años sobre sus espaldas). Para el próximo año estaría bien organizar una fiesta anual Minutos Musicales a la que fueramos todos y así compartir 'amigos musicales'.
  

Ya sabéis también que cualquier comentario al respecto de esta lista será bien recibido así como sugerencias, nuevos miembros, nuevas iniciativas, etc...

Minutos Musicales: Eddie Vedder

que mejor grupo para hoy que el cantante y lider de Pearl Jam: Eddie Vedder.

Este año ha publicado un album de altibajos, con diversas canciones semi-marchosas que no acaban de calar ni tener una fuerza sustancial que llegue a transmitir; mientras que la sutileza y calidad se muestran en las canciones lentas, tranquilas. Se vé como su voz reposa frágil sobre las cuerdas de la guitarra que suele acompañarle... y estas son las que hoy os ofrezco. Para lo demás dejo a la Wikipedia que hoy nos ilumine en nuestra ignorancia. ;-DD

"!Edward Louis Severson III (23 de diciembre de 1965 - ), mejor conocido como Eddie Vedder es el cantante principal, escritor y líder del grupo estadounidense Pearl Jam. Desde 1990, él ha tocado también la guitarra en algunas de canciones de Pearl Jam. También toca otros diversos instrumentos, incluyendo el ukelele, la batería y la armónica. Es Vegetariano

Antes de formar parte de Pearl Jam, Vedder fue vocalista de fondo en el álbum Temple Of The Dog que fue un tributo a Andrew Wood, vocalista de Mother Love Bone, que murió por una sobredosis de drogas en marzo de 1990. La muerte de Wood motivó a Stone Gossard y a Jeff Ament a crear su siguiente agrupación, la cual terminó siendo Pearl Jam.

Además de formar parte de Pearl Jam, Vedder ha tocado y grabado con diversos artistas de renombre; entre estos figuran: The Doors, Ramones, Bad Religion, Zeke, Fastbacks,Wolfmother, Neil Finn, Jack Irons, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Cat Power, R.E.M., Supersuckers, Mike Watt, Wellwater Conspiracy, The Who, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Peter Frampton, Ben Harper, U2 y Neil Young.

Vedder ha utilizado el pseudónimo "Jerome Turner" en algunos álbumes de Pearl Jam al darse reconocimiento en el desempeño de funciones que no se relacionan directamente con la música (tales como diseño y dibujos). Algunas veces también ha utilizado el sobrenombre "Wes. C. Addle" (por "West Seattle" o sea Seattle del oeste).

Vedder no tuvo una infancia fácil. Creció en Evanston, cerca de Chicago, Illinois y sus padres se divorciaron en 1965 cuando Eddie apenas contaba con un año de vida; su madre se volvió a casar con un hombre llamado Peter Mueller. Trascurrieron muchos años antes de que Vedder supiera que Mueller no era realmente su padre. A mediados de la década de 1970, Vedder y su familia se trasladaron al Condado de San Diego, California. Cuando Eddie cumplió doce años, su madre le regaló su primer guitarra la cual fue se fuente de consuelo durante este periodo de su vida. A los quince años Vedder ya se había independizado y había cambiado su apellido a Vedder, él cual es realmente su apellido materno, cuando su madre se divorció por segunda ocasión. Eddie llegó a saber quién era realmente su padre aunque ya había conocido a susodicho anteriormente pero no se le había dicho a Eddie quién era realmente. Luego de trabajar por algún tiempo en una farmacia en Encinitas, se retiró de su escuela y renunció a su trabajo y regresó a Chicago, ciudad en la cual su madre y sus hermanos ya estaban radicados.

En 1984, Vedder regresó a San Diego junto con su novia de aquel entonces, Beth Liebling. Vedder pasó de un trabajo a otro, entre los cuales destacó el de asistente en una gasolinera, pero mientras trabajaba también grababa demos de sus canciones. Al corto tiempo Vedder formó parte de Bad Radio. Luego que Vedder abandonara dicha agrupación, Jack Irons, amigo de Vedder y antiguo baterista de los Red Hot Chili Peppers, le entregó un demo a Eddie que incluía música de Stone Gossard. Stone Gossard estaba involucrado en la creación de una nueva agrupación, luego que su antiguo grupo se desintegrara por la muerte de Andrew Wood. Vedder hizo uso de su talento como vocalista y grabó tres canciones de Gossard que no habían sido completadas. Vedder convirtió esas tres canciones en una historia (dicha historia abarca las tres) sobre un niño cuyo padre muere y cuando crece se parece tanto a su padre que su madre empieza a tener relaciones sexuales con él y esto acaba convirtiéndolo en un asesino. Las tres canciones, "Alive", "Once" y "Footsteps", quedaron tan bien que Vedder fue reclutado para formar parte de Pearl Jam.

Se dice que varios vocalistas han llegado a ser inspirados por Vedder y entre estos están los vocalistas de Creed, Puddle of Mudd, Nickelback

Eddie tiene una hija, llamada Olivia, quien nació el 11 de junio de 2004, con su novia Gi Vedder. Vedder estuvo casado anteriormente con Beth Liebling."

Minutos Musicales: Black Mountain

aquí os dejo un par de temas de un grupo de una banda que simultanea el pop con el rock (os daréis cuenta por la guitarra del segundo tema). De hechos en sus composiciones son como un conglomerados de diversos artistas: Neil Young, Buffalo Springfield, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, the Velvet Underground y Black Sabbath.

Los temas que he seleccionado curiosamente los canta una mujer (Amber Weber) a pesar de que el cantante principal sea hombre (Stephen McBean). Stephen también es la cabeza visible del grupo Pink Mountaintrops aunque su estilo es mucho más experimental

Como anécdota comentar que este grupo (Black Mountain) es la banda cabezera del colectivo 'Black Mountain Army', que agrupa a músicos, artistas y amigos en Vancouver (Canada).

"By day, three members of the band work for an organization (Insite) that meets the basic living requirements of the chronically poor, drug addicted and mentally ill near Vancouver's infamous Main & Hastings intersection, widely considered to be the heroin capital of Canada, if not North America. The name "Black Mountain" could be a reference to a large pile of hashish.

Black Mountain has released one self-titled LP (2005) and an EP titled Druganaut (2004) on the Jagjaguwar label. A split single with Destroyer was released in Fall 2004 on Spirt of Orr. The "Stormy High" single was released in 2006 on Suicide Squeeze records.

Also, in 2005, the band opened for Coldplay on their Twisted Logic Tour for three weeks, with their final opening in San Diego. Their self-titled album was chosen as one of Amazon.com's Top 100 Editor's Picks of 2005.

They recently were featured on the soundtrack for the box-office hit movie Spider-Man 3, with their song "Stay Free".

A vinyl single was released in April 2007 named "Surrender Sound Session: Unkle vs. Autolux/Black Mountain" with a remix of "No Hits" on the B side.

In a recent 10th anniversary edition of Uncut magazine, the band have been mentioned in the "Book Of Rock Revelations" that came free with it."

mucho se ha dicho y escrito de este compositor con lo que prefiero no ser yo el que se haga el listo dando lecciones.

Lo que sí puedo comentar es que os vais a encontrar a un cantante de Minnesota que transmite delicadeza y ternura en unas canciones tranquilas y con un claro tinte de Americana. Me encantaría verle en el Auditorio del Primavera Sound el año que viene... veremos a ver si alguien recoge el guante.

Minutos Musicales: Xiu Xiu

hoy os presento un disco de colaboración en donde la banda Xiu Xiu se junta con múltiples nombres grandes y realiza una mezcolanza de temas. Los caloboradores son: To Live and Shave in L.A. (Tom Smith), Her Space Holiday, Larsen, Oxbow, Sunset Rubdown, Marissa Nadler, Good For Cows, kid606, XO Skeletons, Gold Chains, Devendra Banhart, Warbucks, Cherry Point, and Grouper.

Este mismo grupo ha sacado este año otros 2 discos de colaboración (¿Spichiology? y A Soundtrack for a Polaroid of Two Trees In Indiana), además de un EP (Jamie Stewart Pre Xiu Xiu picture disc) y el año que viene sacarán el disco "Women As Lovers". Por eso nos encontramos con un grupo de múltiples facetas y con una increible capacidad de generar riqueza musical (desde el 2002 tienen 8 albums).

El grupo tiene se base en San Francisco, California, y a veces en Seattle. Su música incorpora todo tipo de estilos (punk, noise rock, ambient noise, folk...) y tiene un lider indiscutible: Jamie Stewart. Sus principales influencias son 'The Cure' y 'Joy Division'.

"Xiu Xiu es una banda de indie rock experimental originaria de San Jose (California), pero establecida en Seattle (Washington). Es un proyecto que partió de una idea del cantautor Jamie Stewart, quien ha sido el único componente que ha permanecido en la banda desde su formación. El resto del grupo lo forman su prima, Caralee McElroy, y el percusionista experimental Ches Smith (7 Year Rabbit Cycle, Good for Cows, Mr. Bungle). En ocasiones son acompañados por Cory McCulloch. Por sus filas han pasado músicos tales como Lauren Andrews, Yvonne Chen, Sam Mickens y Jherek Bischoff. Algunos de ellos, incluido McCulloch, habían tocado junto a Stewart en bandas anteriores como Ten in the Swear Jar y IBOPA. El nombre del grupo fue tomado de la película, Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl de la directora china Joan Chen."

hoy os presento un tipo de música que muchas veces se hace difícil de entender pero que particularmente a mí me gusta mucho. Es algo así como si a la música le quitas la letra, el ritmo, la batería y reduces la velocidad de reproducción al mínimo - quizá se le pueda llamar sonido mínimo aunque en su myspace se tachan a sí mismo de 'minimalistas' - pero tiene tanta intensidad y es tan sutil que merece tener su apartado en esta lista de distribución musical.

Creo que la mejor forma de introduciros en su música es esta: their lo-fi piano music made with love is fragile but outstandingly beautiful and delicate. it creates very unique world which is for only him and her. I recommend that you should listen to this sounds under sunlight.

Y una última recomendación: date unos minutos y escucha los temas con la tranquilidad que se merece.

aquí recojo el comentario pertinente de la web 'Hypersonica' (http://www.hipersonica.com/) en donde se destaca con mucho criterio el disco que hoy os presento. Como resumen decir que la electrónica en un formato semi-duro llega hoy a vuestros oidos.

"Mark E. Smith, cabeza pensante de los imprescindibles The Fall, y los alemanes electrónicos Mouse on Mars se han unido para crear el disco que a LCD Soundsystem no le sale (y ahora que se arrima al sonido U2 aún menos). Bajo el nombre de Von Südenfed y con el disco Tromatic Reflexxions, el trío calavera ha creado un sonido de baile chulesco, quebrado y muy macarra.

Fledermaus Can´t Get It, primer tema del disco, engancha rápidamente encajando todos las piezas de este puzzle. Sobre un ritmo destinado a contagiarse a todos los huesos de tu cuerpo y ruiditos electrónicos, Mark E. Smith se pone su careta habitual (la de chulo de barrio) y escupe sus textos. Tan pegadiza como el Heart Of Hearts de !!!.

La fórmula funciona en otras muchas canciones. En Flooded aplicándole unos cuantos ritmos rotos, en Family Freud dándole pátina de R&B lujoso a los Missy Elliot, en The Rhinohead aplicándole una melodía pop y dejando por los suelos a los mediocres Kasabian.

Puede que al disco le venza su extensión y su falta de variedad (ahí alivian el tema Chicken Yaiamas o Dearest Friends). Puede que el experimento les hubiese quedado mucho mejor en formato corto. Pero es el disco ideal para ponerte contento mientras te preparas para salir de juerga y para hacer el cafre a altas horas de la noche. ¿Qué más se puede pedir de un pasatiempo temporal hasta para sus propios creadores?"

hoy os ofrecemos a otro de esos artistas que debido a su creatividad se lanza a publicar temas nuevos en paralelo a grupos a los que pertenece y que tienen mucho más renombre que su carrera en solitario.

Este es el caso de Thurston Joseph Moore, lider del grupo Sonic Youth (cantante, compositor y guitarrista) que ha participado como solista colaborando con diversos grupos fuera de Sonic Youth e incluso se ha atrevido con la creación de un pequeño sello musical.

"In addition to his work with Sonic Youth, Moore has also released albums as a solo artist (one under the moniker David Adelmen), including 1995's Psychic Hearts. He and Gordon released a few songs as Mirror/Dash, a reference to their respective nicknames. ("Mirror" being an alliterative pun on "Moore," and "Dash" being a pun on Flash Gordon.)

Moore has collaborated with scores of musicians, including Lydia Lunch, DJ Spooky, William Hooker, Christian Marclay, Mike Watt, Loren Mazzacane Connors, Nels Cline, Cock E.S.P., Chris Corsano and My Cat is an Alien. Most of his solo/duo collaborations have been instrumental, and are generally improvised and/or noise based.

In the early 1990s, Moore formed the side band Dim Stars, featuring punk legend Richard Hell of the Voidoids. Moore performed solo on the side stage of the 1993 Lollapalooza tour.

In 1994, Moore teamed up with Greg Dulli of The Afghan Whigs, Don Fleming of Gumball, Mike Mills of R.E.M., and Dave Grohl of Nirvana/Foo Fighters, to form the Backbeat Band, which recorded the soundtrack album to the movie Backbeat. Additionally, Moore also contributed guitar work and backing vocals on "Crush With Eyeliner," which appeared on R.E.M.'s Monster LP.

Since 2004, Moore has recorded and performed with the all-star noise collective To Live and Shave in L.A., the lineup of which also features Andrew W.K.. He recorded with the band at Sonic Youth's former studio in Manhattan, and later performed with them at the George W. Bush "anti-inaugural" Noise Against Fascism concert in Washington, D.C., named in reference to S.Y.'s 1992 song "Youth Against Fascism." Moore curated the "Nightmare Before Christmas" weekend of the All Tomorrow's Parties music festival, in December 2006.

Moore directed the music video for Pavement's song "Here," from Slanted and Enchanted.

Moore is a member of director Jim Jarmusch's "secret club," The Sons Of Lee Marvin.

Moore also composed the score for the 2001 film Manic, which starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
On June 21, 2007, Moore revealed to Spin Magazine that he would be releasing a solo album titled Trees Outside The Academy. The album was recorded at J Mascis' studio in Amherst, Massachusetts. The album is made up of mostly acoustic material, it features Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley and violinist Samara Lubelski. The album also features collaborations between Mascis and Charalambides' Christina Carter, who performs a duet with Moore on the track, "Honest James." The album was released on September 18, 2007, on Moore's label Ecstatic Peace."

aquí os presento una banda con una amplia trayectoria: 10 albums y 5 EPs.

Quizá el ver sus influencias te permita abstraerte y referenciar correctamente el tipo de música que realizan: The Simpletons, Billy Bragg, The Housemartins, The Magnetic Fields, Belle & Sebastian, The Smiths, Aztec Camera, Lloyd Cole y Orange Juice.

El que escuche de nuevas sus canciones se encontrará con un repertorio basado en unas letras bien estudiadas y que hablan de temas muy comunes ( "Songs by the Lucksmiths are mostly about love and relationships, but also deal with other everyday issues such as notable friends or warm weather"). En global cada uno de sus discos son una combinación de muchas sensaciones diferentes: canciones lentas, rápidas, con voces combinadas de chico y chica, con mucha letra o bien casi toda instrumental....

En este último disco se publican 2 CDs con un total de 55 temas, algunos de los cuales son en vivo.

"The Lucksmiths are an independent pop band from Melbourne, Australia who formed in 1993 and have been associated with the genres of indie pop, anti-folk and retro-pop.

The members are Martin "Marty" Donald (guitar), Taliesyn "Tali" White (vocals, drums), and Mark Monnone (bass) and in 2004 they acquired Mid State Orange's guitarist Louis Richter on second guitar.

In the early 90's, they met Chris Crouch, who informally 'signed them' to his record label, Candle Records. Crouch consequently began releasing their records, and they began to play the Melbourne indie circuit, most notably the Punters Club and later expanded to other Australian venues such as Sydney's The Annandale Hotel or Brisbane's the Troubadour.

The Punters Club, however, clearly holds a special place in The Lucksmiths' history as seen in the song "Requiem to the Punters' Club", written after its conversion to the bar Bimbo Deluxe."

aquí otro grupo que practican un pop sin contemplaciones, muy pegadizo y de fácil digestión.

Este disco es una banda sonora fantástica para esa sobremesa en casa después de haber comido con los amigos y te apetece estar de charla tomando un café. Canciones mono-rítmicas, que rescatan sonidos efervescentes y con unas voces que destacan ampliamente sobre la instrumentación.

Difícil se hace elegir algún tema porque el disco en conjunto forma un cuadro perfecto para escuchar de un tirón. Al igual que comentaba en el párrafo anterior, la voz es el factor clave de éxito de este grupo que ya tiene en su haber 2 albums. Comentan por ahí que este grupo les gustará a los fans de 'Heavenly'... y ciertamente no se quedan atrás en dicho comentario.

"While there are plenty of "aww...how cute" moments in the back-story of Grand Rapids, Michigan’s The Icicles, it would be a mistake to see them as mere DIY indie-poppers. It's true; The Icicles did sell handmade hats and mittens at craft shows to pay for the recording of their debut EP. Joleen, initially too shy to play with Gretchen in the early days, thought she’d be of use to the fledgling group as a seamstress. But, The Icicles needed a keyboardist, and Gretchen liked how Joleen sweetly played "Blackbird" on the guitar when they first met as students at Grand Valley State University. So, with Joleen in place, the band was born. The group eventually found their way to the stage via the local pop shows brought to Grand Rapids by their future label boss, Drive In/Microindie's Mike Babb, and have stood out (in matching outfits) from day one. They are, at once, a perfect combination of surface and substance.

The Icicles share with their contemporaries The Concretes and Camera Obscura (or with past favorites Heavenly, The Softies and Tiger Trap) the ability to create music that recalls the joyous pop sound of the great Sixties' girl groups, at the same time managing to breathe a certain maturity into this oft-visited genre. The tried and true themes of young love and youthful, naive exuberance are present, but tempered with realism and the wistfulness that comes through a grown-up knowledge of conflict and regret.

The Icicles recorded their debut EP Pure Sugar at Kingsize Studios in Chicago with Dave Trumfio (OK Go, Billy Bragg, Wilco) at the helm. Although Trumfio is now best known to his major label clients, the group tracked him down because of his work for the band Holiday. Six songs were recorded, mixed and mastered over the course of a frenetic weekend in October 2001, and the resulting EP was released in March 2002. Pure Sugar charted with college radio all over the country, and the Icicles toured extensively through the Midwest USA in support of the release.

2003 saw some personnel changes in The Icicles’ line-up. Emily, who, remarkably, had only picked up a bass guitar for the first time three weeks prior to joining, replaced original bassist Daniel. After a short period as an official “girl group,” drummer and founding member Korrie Sue left and Greg, veteran of a half-dozen local bands (and secret Icicles admirer), took over for what he thought would be a temporary gig. The new rhythm section provided such a solid backing for Gretchen and Joleen’s increasingly intricate harmonies and melodies though that a permanent invitation was quickly offered and accepted.

For their debut full length, The Icicles traded a cold Chicago warehouse for the warmth and comfort of Gary Olson's Marlborough Farms. The band had shared bills with Olson's Ladybug Transistor before, but it was his keen ear for layered vocal arrangements that drew them to his Brooklyn home studio in February 2004. Britt Myers, whose talents The Icicles already knew from his work with The Essex Green and Dressy Bessy did mixing and mastering duties.

Released in January 2005, A Hundred Patterns went on to draw praise from blogger boys (You Ain't No Picasso) and established media outlets (All Music Guide, Pop Matters) alike. The album also impressed the folks at Motorola, who eventually made The Icicles' "Sugar Sweet" the theme song of a worldwide ad campaign promoting their new KRZR phone in November 2006.

The Icicles embarked on a full US tour in support of A Hundred Patterns from February through April of 2005 and, after a brief resting period back home in Grand Rapids, got the ball rolling for the next release. Rebecca Rodriguez joined The Icicles in early 2006 in time for the group to make their next record. With her distinct playing style, she adds lead guitar lines reminiscent of The Cure and the classic Sarah Records' era, helping the Icicles achieve a fuller, more distinct sound than ever before.

After a couple of false starts with other producers, the Icicles finally put down the tracks for their new album in the fall of 2006, and also took time for a short East Coast tour. Local live sound recording legend, Al Mc Avoy recorded the group at his quaint studio. The group again turned to Britt Myers for his mixing prowess, and in January 2007, the band had another record ready for release. The resulting album Arrivals & Departures (due April. 9, 2007), in combination with the Motorola deal, finds the Icicles with a new worldwide audience and an optimistic outlook for the future.

The Icicles will be touring in support of Arrivals & Departures on the East Coast in April 2007. "

The Fugitives, a combination of multi-talented Vancouver artists Mark Berube, Barbara Adler, and Brendan McLeod, have been classified under many guises: slam folk, folk hop, spoken word cabaret. Yet a common throughline is always their remarkable storytelling abilities. That, and the fact that audiences all over the world have never seen anything like this blend of skilful musicianship and passionate performance poetry.

Since their formation three years ago, The Fugitives have been everywhere, touring Europe four times and Canada twice. In that time they have gone from performing in old bank vaults in London to university classes in Germany to recent main stage appearances on the Canadian folk festival circuit. In the past year alone, they have sold out headlining shows at festivals as diverse as the Vienna Literary Festival, the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, the Vancouver Jazz Festival, and the Chutzpah Dance Festival. Their live shows, where they are accompanied by versatile instrumentalist Steven Charles, have been critically acclaimed for their passion and poignancy. As the CBC puts it, “whether you go for the poetry, the music, or both, this show is simply brilliant.”

There is no place The Fugitives haven’t played, and the maturity shows on their newest release, In Streetlight Communion. Distributed by Festival and featuring collaborations with members of The Be Good Tanyas, Po’ Girl, TOFU, and The Breakmen, the album carefully straddles musical and poetic worlds, delivering insightful lyrics and passionate harmonies over home hitting riffs. It is a new kind of music, one the Vancouver Province praises by saying, “fences are being broken down here.”

The Fugitives are not a political band, per say. They don’t offer up trite slogans or ubiquitous aphorisms or overtly rail against the government. What they do offer us, in a time when meaningless abounds, when billboards scream absurdities and our radio stammers out the same old cliches, is a change. They confront us with a land where lyrics and instruments co-exist on the same plain, where content and form are equally important to an aesthetic message. Music like this forces us to listen with both our head and our heart, and in times such as these, it is a cause for celebration.
